In its capacity as the national federation for athletics its aims, responsibilities and jurisdiction are: to encourage , promote, develop and control amateur athletics in Malta. To promote and organise or assist in promoting and organising , the holding of amateur athletic events, championships, competitions, demonstrations and events, to select competitors to represent the Association or the Country , and to pay the expenses of persons so selected, and to enter into any arrangements which may be necessary or convenient in connection therewith or with any of the objects of the Association. To arrange and provide for, or join in arranging and providing for the holding of courses for the instruction and teaching of athletics to teachers, coaches, instructors. To lay down and enforce rules and regulations covering all aspects of amateur athletics, to improve the management of athletic meetings by the establishment of uniform regulations, to define the status and prescribe the conduct of amateur athletics and to deal repressively with any abuses in amateur athletics. Over the past weeks the International indoor athletics season took off, with the season locally commencing on Saturday 4th February with the first pre-season meeting to be held at Marsa starting at Some of the top Local National Team athletes have however already taken advantage of the International competitions for their first tests. Last week Rebecca Camilleri Pembroke Athleta compete in Ancona, Italy with some very credible results over the 60m running 7. On Sunday 29th January her team mate and male counterpart Andy Grech participated in an open meeting in Lee Valley, reaching the final in the 60m to better his personal record to 7. Lee Valley, the training base for the Xuereb twins Martina and Francesca, saw some other Maltese athletes test their legs.
